The Bios® story – World pioneers!
The story of the Bios Urn® started when co-founder Gerard Moline was a young child. He was in the garden planting flowers and vegetables with his grandmother, when she discovered a dead bird. She instinctively took the bird, buried it in a hole and planted some wildflower seeds on top – thus giving it new life.
Gerard carried this memory with him for many years, and in 1997 he created the first prototypes for the Bios Urn® which later went to market in 2001. His idea emerged from understanding the funeral process in a broader and more sustainable way.
It was the very first biodegradable urn in the marketplace and also the only one which introduced the idea of planting a tree with the remains obtained after cremation.
It is more economical for people and the environment, as well as more sustainable. Not only is it a more therapeutic burial alternative, but it is also a way to convert cemeteries into forests all around the world and aid in much needed global reforestation.
Throughout this journey, the Bios® brand has become a pioneer in the media and in the world. Our urn has since reached people from all corners of the world, in over 47 countries which is truly a dream come true.
The New Bios Urn® – New relaunch!
We are so excited to finally be able to announce this as we have been working really hard behind the scenes!
We are pleased to present the New Bios Urn® which is now available!
It has a much more sleek and minimalist design. Our logo is barely visible now, because for us, the Bios® experience shouldn’t be about our brand, it should be personal to you or your loved-one.
The new design of the top capsule represents tree rings (also called Dendrochronology) like the rings that you see inside a tree. Each year, as a tree grows, it adds a light ring of new growth to its trunk during the spring and early summer, when growing quickly, and a thinner, dark ring in the fall, when growth is slower. This is why we decided to include them on the top of the urn as a symbol of the passing of time and how you will still be able to see your loved-one grow each and every year.
Many others have copied our urn. However we have come to realize that copying differs from inspiration. And that’s why we will never copy another idea, we just want to keep on working hard to provide you with improved, original and innovative ideas. We will always strive to be pioneers in the market so that every single person can have access to economical, eco-friendly and sustainable burial alternatives to approach this inevitable phase of human life.
What is clear is that the structure of burial and funerals no longer serve individuals or the environment, and the only way to move forward is through innovation.
Aside from the New Bios Urn®, our logo and brand have also had a sleek make-over. We wanted them to try and reflect this new way of thinking: more minimalistic and less obvious.
And we also have a brand new website which we hope is easier to use and to find all of the useful information you may need!
The New Bios Urn® is in stock and can be purchased on our online shop and can be shipped worldwide. Delivery is generally 3-8 business days depending on where you live.
The great things about the New Bios Urn®
It has a new discreet and personable design.
The New Bios Urn® is made locally and ethically, using 100% biodegradable materials leaving absolutely no trace on our precious planet.
It also has no expiry date. This means that anyone who wishes to “pre-plan” for when they are no longer here may do so. This makes the very difficult grieving time easier on loved-ones by leaving them a Bios Urn® and clear after-life wishes.
The truth is many of us don’t want to think about their afterlife plans, and there is a huge taboo around dying. We hope to slowly change that!
The Bios Urn® is designed to contain any tree seed, shrub or plant and can be planted in any natural environment, so that the person may choose a seed or seedling which adapts perfectly to their region anywhere in the world.
The urn has a special design which allows for the healthy growth of a tree, flower, or plant, even when planting in cremation ashes. It contains an upper and lower capsule. This design is intentional, as ashes must be kept separate from the seeds, especially during the first 3 months of growth – regardless of if the user use a sprout, or seeds, because ashes have high PH levels which can negatively affect, or even stunt growth.
