Summer’s warm sunshine makes it a great season for outdoor get-togethers and activities. It’s no surprise that many consider planting their Bios Urn® at this time. While summer may seem like the perfect time, trees face extra challenges in the heat. Although planting is possible in summer, fall is considered the best season. Cooler temperatures and increased moisture help reduce stress on trees, giving them a stronger start.
Challenges of Planting in the Heat
Summer heat and dryness make it difficult for new trees to establish roots. Young trees and plants must adapt to different soil conditions, grow roots, and adjust to their new environment. The intense heat and direct sunlight add extra street, making survival harder. This weakens their ability to endure winter dormancy and bud in spring. Summer planting is not ideal, as plants focus more on photosynthesis than root growth during late spring and the hot months.
Can You Plant in the Summer?
Although fall is the best time to plant, it’s still possible to plant in the summer with extra care. If you must plant during the warmer months, here are some things to keep in mind:
- Choose the Right Timing: Avoid the hottest, usually July and August, when high temperatures and dry soil make planting more difficult.
- Opt for Container-Grown Trees: Trees grown in containers already have an established root system, making them more resilient to summer planting stress.
- Water Deeply and Wisely: The summer sun evaporates water quickly. Water deeply and slowly every few days to ensure moisture reaches the roots. Watering in the morning or evening helps prevent excessive evaporation.
- Use Mulch to Retain Moisture: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree. Mulch keeps the soil moist and helps roots stay cool and hydrated.
Fall remains the ideal season for planting, but if summer is the only option, careful planning, and extra attention can help your tree thrive. However, the best approach is patience—waiting for fall or the best season for your chosen tree or plant gives it the best chance for long-term success.
