Saving the Sycamore Gap Tree through Science and Hope

The Sycamore Gap Tree, a beloved landmark next to Hadrian’s Wall, stood tall for over a century.  In September 2023, it was destroyed by vandalism. Known as the Robin Hood Tree, it had become a favorite among locals and visitors. The tree had been part of the landscape since the late 1800s. Today, only a solitary stump remains—a reminder of the mighty tree that once stood there.

A Glimmer of Hope Emerges

Despite this tragic loss, hope soon emerged. The National Trust acted quickly to preserve the tree’s legacy. They salvaged seeds and young branches with buds, called scions. These materials are essential for grafting—a method used to grow a genetic copy of the tree. This effort aims to bring the Sycamore Gap Tree back to life.

The Science of Regeneration

The seeds and scions were carefully collected and sent to a facility in Devon. Skilled horticulturists began the grafting process by attaching new roots to the scions. This technique allows it to grow into a new, living tree, identical to the original Robin Hood Tree. The collected seeds were also planted at the facility.

New Sycamore Gap Tree Saplings Sprout

After months of care, new saplings began to grow. These saplings are essential backups in case of disease, storms, or other threats. If the stump fails to regrow naturally—a possibility experts will assess over three years—one of these saplings may take its place. Yet, these young trees are more than replacements. Though the original tree can’t be replaced, the new ones will carry its story forward in their own way.
