Mathieu Planted His Mother’s Bios Urn® near a Forest in Quebec

“A tree is beautiful, but what’s more, it has a right to life; like water, the sun and the stars, it is essential. Life on earth is inconceivable without trees.”

Each tree planting is unique, as is each story, and each person who plants one. Similarly, each individual who uses a Bios Urn® has a story to tell. Mathieu’s story is peaceful and beautiful. After his mother, Micheline, passed away last year he was unsure of what to do with her ashes – as are many people when faced with loss. While his mother’s wishes were to have a traditional ceremony, he knew he wanted to do more. He consulted with a local funeral home whom he held a funeral ceremony with and they brought to his attention the Bios Urn®, and proposed he could use one as a secondary private event, using a portion of the ashes. He loved the idea, and after having a larger more traditional ceremony, he took the Bios Urn® and proceeded to his own private celebration of life for his mother.

Mathieu ultimately ended up choosing an Oak tree for her, as he wanted it to stand out amongst the other pine trees in the vicinity he was planting it. The Oak tree is said to represent strength, resilience, and truth.  He chose a small Oak sapling, as he only makes visits the special spot once a year during his annual sojourn. He planted the Bios Urn® and small Oak sapling in a remote region in Shawinigan, very close to Mauricie National Park in Québec. The place he planted is a campsite he frequented with his mother when he was young, and it is so remote in fact, that in order to reach it, he has to paddle out 1 hour via canoe to it – which is reflective of the physical and emotional journey he takes to see it.
We are thankful to Mathieu, and countless others like him who have resonated with our project, and who have beautiful stories to share.
